| Batang fish is commonly known in Chinese as 马鲛鱼 (mǎ jiāo yú), which translates to Spanish Mackerel. In local Singaporean wet markets, it is often called 巴当鱼 (bā dàng yú), a phonetic translation from the Malay name "Ikan Batang". It is a popular, firm-fleshed fish used for fish soup and porridge. |
